The pygmy hippo is a species of hippo that is native to West Africa. While it looks very similar to the common hippo, the pygmy hippo is much smaller. Both species belong to the same family, making them close relatives despite their differences in size and behavior. Like their larger relatives, pygmy hippos generally live near rivers, but they spend more time on land. This explains why their toes are not as heavily webbed as those of common hippos.
