In July 2024, Moo Deng, a female pygmy hippo, was born at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand. Her expressive face and fearless personality quickly gained attention, and photos of her were made into memes that took the internet by storm. Before she became famous, few people were aware that her counterparts in the wild are on the edge of extinction. Pygmy hippos are currently listed as endangered animals. It is estimated that fewer than 3,000 remain in the wild.
