美国史密松学会的「全球火山计划」指出，根据推测，海利古比火山自从约1万2千年前、上一个冰河期结束后的「全新世」以来，就没有任何喷发活动。
美国密西根理工大学的火山学者卡恩（Simon Carn）表示，海利古比自从全新世喷发后就没有过任何喷发纪录。
至于这次火山爆发造成的灾情和附近居民的影响，衣索匹亚官方暂时没有回应。
