Off the coast of southwestern Australia lies a small island with a rich history. Although Rottnest Island is only 19 square kilometers in size, it catches the attention of both local and international travelers. The island received its name in 1696, when a Dutch sea captain decided to call it Rottnest, which means “rat’s nest” in Dutch. He gave the name because he mistook the island’s native quokkas for giant rats. Today, it is a tourist destination that offers excitement and relaxation.
