Body piercing might seem like a modern fashion trend, but it is actually a very old tradition. Long before people wore stylish earrings or nose rings, piercings were used by ancient cultures to show strength, social status, or even spiritual connection.
The ear was the first area used for body decoration. Over 5,000 years ago, people began stretching their earlobes, as can be seen from Ötzi the Iceman, who was found in the European Alps. In some African tribes, long earlobes were considered a sign of beauty as well as wisdom. The Dayak people in Borneo believed that long ears could help them communicate with spirits.
